A Walk in the Park

We went for a walk in the Myles Standish State Forest a couple weeks ago, on the Easthead Nature Trail. This trail is about 3.5 miles around a small pond and took us roughly 1 hour to hike it. Besides the swans, we saw turtles, frogs, and a hawk. On a sunny day you can smell the pine as it heats up in the sun.
I picked up 2 trash bags of junk...someone's leftover trash from a picnic, several Dunkin Donut coffee cups, 2 empty nip bottles, a whole lotta cigarette butts, oh, yeah, and a used baby diaper. If you can pack it in, then you can pack it out. I shouldn't have to do it for you.

Friends of MSSF did a great job clearing brush, removing debris from the edges of the trails, hanging trail markers and painting sign posts on Saturday. We didn't find much garbage and now I know why. Thanks Maggi. We only finished half the trail and need to set a date to go back to complete the work.

Another group took a truck and removed two huge loads of trash from the forest. Other people have been going to the Forest, as you did Maggie, to work on their own. Please be sure to write to me, Sharl, slheller@comcast.net and report the work you do. We are keeping track and its important that we do! We will tally up the work at the next Friends meeting, June 7.

Please contact the Forest Headquarters if you are going to be working there in a major way so that they know you belong there: Myles.Standish@state.ma.us.

Thanks to everyone who is helping to make MSSF a better place.
